How to Brief a Love-Letter Writer
A useful brief does not need to sound romantic. It needs to reveal what is true, what is at stake and how you actually speak to each other.
Begin with the job the letter must do
‘Write something beautiful’ is understandable but too broad. A proposal letter, anniversary letter, apology, private declaration and closure letter have different emotional responsibilities.
- Who will receive the letter?
- What is the occasion or trigger?
- What do you hope the reader understands afterward?
- Will the letter be spoken, handwritten, sent digitally or kept private?
- Is there a fixed date or event?
- Is the letter asking for something, acknowledging something or simply recording it?
Share scenes, not only adjectives
Saying ‘she is caring’ gives the writer an opinion. Describing how she sends a message after every late flight gives the writer evidence. Specific behaviour is the bridge between private feeling and believable language.

Describe how you sound when you are most yourself
A letter can be emotionally true and still feel false if the vocabulary does not belong to the sender. Tell the writer whether you are direct, teasing, formal, restrained, lyrical, awkward, bilingual or more comfortable showing love through action.
- Share two or three genuine messages you have written, with private details removed if needed.
- Mention words you use naturally and words you would never say.
- State whether the recipient likes intensity or becomes uncomfortable with it.
- Explain how humour operates in the relationship.
- Say whether names, nicknames or Hindi-English shifts should appear.
Set the ethical and emotional boundaries
- Identify facts or memories that must not be included.
- Do not ask the writer to fabricate events, promises or feelings.
- Explain whether the recipient knows about the underlying issue.
- Avoid using a letter to pressure, threaten, deceive or impersonate consent.
- State whether the work must remain entirely private.
- Clarify whether the writer may retain anonymised process notes or must delete supplied material.

What happens after the brief
A professional writer should use the brief to prepare a deeper conversation, not simply decorate the submitted phrases. The interview tests emotional emphasis, chronology and voice. The first draft should then feel clearer than your notes without sounding like someone else has entered the relationship.
