What Does a Personalised Poem Cost in India?
The fee is not only for the final lines. It pays for listening, interpretation, drafting, revision and the right to use the work in an agreed way.
There is no single market price for a custom poem
In India, personalised poetry ranges from inexpensive template-led gifts to substantial literary commissions. Two products may both be called a ‘custom poem’ while involving completely different amounts of human work.
A low-cost piece may be created from a short form, use a standard rhyme pattern and insert names or occasions. A higher-touch commission may include a live interview, original literary development, privacy controls, revision and rights suited to print or publication. Comparing only the word count misses the service.
A practical range
| Type of offering | Indicative price logic | Typical characteristics |
|---|---|---|
| Template or instant customisation | Lowest-priced tier | Short input form, formulaic structure, rapid delivery, limited revision. |
| Independent custom poem | Moderate tier | Original writing from a written brief, some conversation or revision. |
| Interview-led literary commission | Premium tier | Deep interview, original form, privacy, voice calibration and considered revision. |
| Major private or commercial commission | Project quotation | Longer work, multiple interviews, exclusivity, publication, performance or commercial use. |
At the time this guide was prepared, a standard poem from a photograph started at ₹4,500, a bespoke writing commission at ₹6,500 and the more substantial One Original commission at ₹25,000. Current quotations should always be confirmed.
Seven factors that affect the price
Depth of interview
A live conversation and follow-up require more time than a short form.
Length and form
A compact occasion poem differs from a long narrative or formally demanding work.
Research material
Photographs, letters, archives or multiple perspectives add review and synthesis.
Turnaround
Urgent delivery may require schedule displacement or a priority fee.
Revisions
One focused revision is different from unlimited redrafting.
Privacy and exclusivity
A work held outside the writer's archive may carry different rights.
Commercial use
Advertising, publication, merchandise or performance requires explicit usage terms.
What a serious quotation should tell you
- What information or interview is required
- The precise deliverable and approximate length or form
- Language and tone
- Number of drafts and revisions
- Delivery format and timeline
- Confidentiality and portfolio-use position
- Copyright, credit and permitted use
- Payment schedule, taxes and cancellation terms
A high price without scope is not automatically premium. A low price without scope is not automatically value.
How to compare two writers
Ask the writer
- How do you gather the story?
- Can I see relevant original work?
- How do you preserve my voice?
- What happens if a line feels emotionally wrong?
- Will my commission remain private?
Ask yourself
- Do I need a gift object or a serious literary work?
- Is the occasion fixed?
- How sensitive is the material?
- Will this be published or only shared privately?
- Does the writer's existing voice fit the task?
Choosing the right level of investment
Use the emotional and practical stakes to choose the tier. A light birthday keepsake may not require a long interview. A memorial poem, wedding reading, anniversary commission or piece intended to survive as a family document may justify greater depth.
The useful question is not ‘How many rupees per line?’ It is ‘What process is required for this person to feel genuinely recognised?’
